What are the ISO 45001 Requirements for Planning?

ISO 45001 Requirement: Occupational Health and Safety Management System Planning to address organizational risks, opportunities, changes and health and safety objectives.

The Key Requirements are outlined on this page.

Section 6 Planning

Section 6.1: Actions to Address Risks and Opportunities

Planning is a common theme throughout the ISO 45001 standard and the general section 6.1.1 is used to emphasize that planning is a key requirement in achieving and maintaining ISO 45001 registration.

Building upon the need to include the influence of the wider elements of the organization Context of the Organization, planning fully embraces the Risk and opportunity management concept. This is to be implemented as a key activity to achieve OH&S goals on a continually improving basis, including an assessment/evaluation of the value of the risk management process.

Risks and opportunities can be associated with legal requirements and other requirements (of section 6.1.3). This section requires that you establish, implement and maintain a process to determine and manage the legal requirements and other requirements that are applicable to your hazards and OH&S risks. Documented information on the applicable legal requirements and other requirements is required to be maintained and retained.

A register of legal obligations can be used to keep the information current, reflect any changes, and used to evaluate compliance of legal and other requirements.

A sample register is provided here.

Section 6.2: OH&S Objectives and Planning to Achieve Them

This section requires that OH&S objectives be established at relevant functions and plans to achieve them be determined.

Plans include:

  • Being directly driven by the OH&S policy itself

  • Being applied to ensure inputs of consultation with workers and their representatives
  • Applicable legal and other requirements
  • Results of assessments of risk and opportunities
  • Be measurable and clearly communicated.
